Spent the day cleaning the house & decorating for Christmas! I love digging out all the ornaments & rediscovering what we packed away last year! I found a few things that were new, that I had purchased on sale & stuffed in the box for this year, then I found stuff that was old...but new! Things that had belonged to my mom or grandma in years past!I have to say, of all the things we have collected over the years it's this stuff that is my favorite!
My mom gave them to me last year & so this year I bought a small tree just for those ornaments! My mom also saved several gift tags that my grandmother Ferguson had made. Long before the days of Michael's with its rows and rows of card making goodies. My grandmother cut paper, bits of felt, yarn, used glitter & beads to create trees & snowmen! She, I think, is the original Martha Stewart!!
They are beautiful for many reasons, the first is just the creativity of them & the love for all of us that caused her to create such special little cards! They must have taken quite a bit of time! The other reason they are so beautiful to me is that she and my grandfather were killed in a tragic car accident just days before Christmas, these were the last cards she was ever to make. I was only 2, and so this is they way I get to "know" her.
My mom saved them all...can you imagine? My mom and dad & family had to go to their house, with it half decorated....or whatever else they left out since they thought they would only be gone an hour or so. Yet some how my mom managed to think ahead & save not just big things, but kept these little mementos. I also have the very last letter she ever wrote, written just days before the accident. My mom had no idea that some day, I would love "old junk" and that these cards & papers would mean so much!!!! Truly these are some of my favorite things!!
